Celebration of Oysters and Cornish Seafood: Falmouth Oyster Festival dates announced

March 2012

One of Cornwall’s most well known events and one of the best specialist food events in the UK, Falmouth Oyster Festival will take place this year from Thursday 11 October and run for four days, until Sunday 14 October.

The four day celebration of the majestic mollusc will kick off with cookery master-class from a celebrity chef, followed by a book signing.  Visitors to the free entry festival will be able to enjoy cookery demonstrations, oyster shucking competitions, a Gourmet Evening at The Flying Fish Restaurant at St Michael’s Hotel, a fine food market of Cornish produce, local art and crafts, sea shanties, live music and a Falmouth Working Boat race.

Now in its 16th year, the festival celebrates all things oyster and marks the start of the oyster dredging season, the diversity and quality of Cornish Seafood and in particular, one of the last remaining traditional oyster fisheries, dredging by sail and hand punt.

Taking place in Events Square in Falmouth, the Falmouth Oyster Festival, regularly attracts more than 38,000 people and is a key diary date for 2012.  The full programme is being finalised and the festival website www.falmouthoysterfestival.co.uk will be updated with all the latest information.

The Falmouth Oyster Festival is sponsored by St Michael’s Hotel & Spa. Nigel Carpenter, Proprietor said “We have been strong supporters of the Falmouth Oyster Festival for a number of years and are delighted to be the main sponsor again this year. This event always has a great atmosphere and there is always something for the whole family to enjoy.

“Over the years we have developed a close relationship with the Falmouth Oystermen and I firmly believe the Oyster Festival is incredibly important in highlighting and celebrating the traditional method of harvesting oysters here in Falmouth.  This is one of the few places in the world where wild oysters are still dredged under sail and it is important that this continues to be appreciated and prospers in the future”.
