Oyster Festival Music

Fantastic Music Line up!

A feast for the senses awaits festival-goers at Falmouth Oyster Festival this year. The festival which runs from 15th to 18th October at Events Square, celebrates the start of the native oyster dredging season and features a lively and varied line up of local bands alongside the daily cookery demonstrations.

Mike Rangecroft, of Falmouth Festivals commented, “The festival, now in its thirteenth year, has always had a strong and varied programme of music to complement the atmosphere created by the culinary tastes and smells of seafood, beers and wines. We hope the impressive line up we have produced will, once again, be met with the approval of the thousands who support the event each year.”

This year will see the festival marquee throwing its doors open on Friday and Saturday evening with free entertainment to keep the festival atmosphere alive until 11.00pm in the evenings. Friday evening will feature local band Viper’s Dream, a five piece lively jazz, blues and bossa nova band which will have people up and dancing from the first number. The band consisting of a vocalist, double bassist, guitarist, saxophonist/flautist and drummer plays an eclectic mix of 50’s and 60’s retro sounding jazz, bossa nova, and blues with wide-ranging styles from melodic bossa nova, jazz and blues to roaring up-beat, swinging and funky jazz.

Saturday will be the turn of Falmouth Soul Sensation to entertain a packed audience playing their eclectic mix of classic and modern Soul Music that appeals to all ages. The band, with a true Falmouth pedigree, is the brain-child of retired drummer Bob Black formerly of the Flying Lizards from the early eighties. By calling on the huge pool of musical talent locally, members of the band came on board with front line vocalists recruited from the local 6th form college, three further singers were added to the three piece female vocal line up currently headed by Maria Tiplady and a variety of current and ex students. Still more local talent in the form of Hollye Sangster and virtuoso Annie Gray joined to complete the brass section, which has recently been added to by Emma Gilkes, (who runs the market on the moor and a local clothes shop) and Richard Evans on the trumpet. Other members dip in and out of the band - notably keyboard player Dave Outan from Penzance who cut his teeth playing with blues bands around the Marquee club in the 60’s. With all this local talent the evening cannot fail to have the audience dancing in the aisles!

As well as the evening highlights, a programme of music will run throughout the four day festival at Events Square in Falmouth. Genres range from Celtic harmonies and Cornish folk bands to jazz, shanty singing with Falmouth Shout and the inimitable Cornish Wurzells, now a regular feature of Falmouth Oyster Festival, will bring the event to a suitable crescendo!

Entry to the festival, including evening entertainment and music is free (apart from the Opening Ceremony) – just buy a raffle ticket, with top prizes, to support the event. Tickets will be available at the reception desk throughout the festival, for full details of the festival programme please see festival website www.falmouthoysterfestival.co.uk.
