Falmouth Schools Join in Oyster Festival Fun!

Falmouth Schools will feature even more widely in the 2009 Falmouth Oyster Festival which takes place at Events Square from Thursday to Sunday next week. Pupils will join three top chefs from Falmouth on centre stage for their cookery demonstrations as part of a cookery project with local schools.

Following on from the pilot project last year when two chefs visited Marlborough School to present pupils with dishes that reflected the sea and importance of local produce - this year the project has been extended to include all primary schools in Falmouth. The chefs participating in the initiative are Arty Williams from the Cove Restaurant at Maenporth, Sanjay Kumar from the Greenbank Hotel and Chris Taylor from Two Ten Restaurant in Falmouth. Each chef is offering two pupils from each of Falmouth's schools the opportunity to follow a master class in their restaurant's kitchens. The children will learn a new dish which later on they will present to fifteen fellow pupils back at their school. These fifteen pupils from each school will be given the ingredients for the dish to cook at home for their parents. Parents will score the dishes, with score sheets being entered into a draw for a free meal at the Greenbank Hotel for one lucky parent.

“The project links professional chefs with children and their parents, with the aim of reinforcing the schools message regarding the importance of healthy eating and it will show the quality of local produce from grown on our doorsteps. Perhaps the most important connection this year is the involvement of suppliers, such as West Country Fruit Sales and through them many local growers. Thanks also go to the Cornish Sea Salt Company for their support” commented John Frankland, project co-ordinator.

The original two children from each school will assist the chefs on stage at the Oyster Festival, where budding chefs of the future may be inspired to take up a career in the catering industry. Schools taking part in the project include Falmouth Secondary School, Falmouth Primary, Marlborough, King Charles, St Mary’s and St Frances Schools.

Around 250 pupils from Falmouth schools will also take part in the Grand Oyster Parade which will start at The Moor on Friday 16th October at 3.15, and wind its way through the town centre streets to the Maritime Museum at Events Square. The parade is always a highlight of the festival bustling with colour and sound with inventive themed costumes and banners. Schools taking part include Marlborough, St Francis, King Charles, St Mary’s Falmouth Primary and the Samba Band from Falmouth Secondary School.

“The inclusion of the community at large and in particular, children, in the Falmouth Oyster Festival is an important aspect that we want to encourage. The festival organisers are extremely grateful to John Frankland for co-ordinating this aspect of the festival.” said Mike Rangecroft, Falmouth Festivals director. Adding “We have a unique fishery that needs recognition and something to be proud of for generations to come.”
