Falmouth Prepares for Oyster Festival Opening on Thursday!
Final preparations are being made for the four day Oyster Festival which starts this Thursday at Events Square in Falmouth. The festival celebrates the start of the native oyster dredging season.
Mat Follas, winner of BBC MasterChef 2009 this years celebrity chef, will be opening the festival on Thursday. Mat will arrive by boat after viewing the Falmouth Working Boats dredging for oysters, and will take to the cookery stage for a masterclass demonstrating his fish cookery techniques. Tickets for the Opening Ceremony are £3 and are available from the Maritime Museum or Falmouth Tourist Information Centre in advance, or at reception on the day. The rest of the festival is free throughout for the four days at the festival marquee at Events Square.
The festival will follow a tried and tested recipe with the ingredients that make this festival one of the top events in Cornwall, with daily cookery demonstrations, oysters, seafood and hot and cold dishes, Skinners ales, wines and champagne from Walter Hicks, Cornish food and craft stalls, all sprinkled with the Oyster Festival special atmosphere.
Live music will entertain festival goers between the cookery demonstration programme with The Tinners, Bragatanga, Just Ken, Dalla, Black Rock Jazz, The Cornish Wurzells, Falmouth Shout and a rumoured visit from Falmouth Marine band. Music on Friday and Saturday will carry the festival through to the evening with Viper’s Dream, following on from the Hot Chef’s Challenge on Friday and Falmouth Soul Sensations on Saturday.
The cookery and music entertainement programme is relayed to a large screen in the main marquee, giving the audience a close up of the action. Last year the Working Boat Race was also transmitted for the enjoyment of visitors to the festival.
"University College Falmouth's School of Media is delighted to be supporting Falmouth's annual Oyster Festival by filming the cookery demonstrations throughout the event," said Director of the School of Media, Paul Inman. "Led by Head of Media Centre, Alan Barnes, students from a range of courses will be operating cameras, mixing sound and working as a production team to bring Falmouth's showcase culinary event to the big screen, which provides them with invaluable experience of a live outside broadcast."
Falmouth Oyster Festival will be embracing sustainability again this year, continuing with the initiative to return the empty oyster shells to the oyster beds around the River Fal. The shells will form the ‘culch’ or base on which the young oysters will grow and visitors to the festival will be encouraged to put their shells in the recycling containers provided. Falmouth Oyster Festival celebrates the traditional methods of dredging for oysters and the conservation practices used by the oystermen gathering the oysters with sail power and hand-pulled dredges used to gather the oysters.
Daytime and evening activities will also be offered at the Moor this year organised by Pubs United Falmouth, and supported by Falmouth pubs. There will be a marquee with children’s activities including face painting, games and entertainment, hot and cold food and BBQ, whilst the Royal Marines will provide cookery demonstrations. There will be a mini beer festival with Cornish ales and cider. Evening music will include The Seagulls, Jonah’s Lift Ceilidh music and dancing, The Shirts. Sunday afternoon will be the turn of the bands with Falmouth School Jazz Band and Pendennis Brass Band.
St Michael’s Hotel & Spa, is the main festival sponsor for this year, will be hosting special events at the hotel to compliment activities at the festival marquee, these include The Oyster Ball, and Gourmet Evening and Oyster Jazz Lunch. The festival can truly be said to have something for everyone
